# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Colindale? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts until the motor sucks it round.

In Colindale, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Colindale: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Which fluid, and about what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we will know.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NW9 5, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Switching your key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Even a short distance up Pasteur Close is too far to drive it.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Moving the vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Colindale forecourt you're on, the Shell included.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out.

Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very place the pickup draws from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Hendon last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, working on whatever it touches till it's cleared from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny channels.

Lines holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car sitting in Colindale. Just in your tank, it stays stable.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Asda, and this issue is diluted fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Kingsbury or the middle of Colindale.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Greater London your car is sitting.

## Colindale: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody intends it.

It mostly takes place at home, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Beis Yaakov Primary School.

Someone pours the bottle in at home, just off Colindale Avenue, as the day ends.

Otherwise, after dark by The Beaufort, the vehicle is topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the spare motor of a home with both fuels.

An identical slip, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be in Colindale or the rest of Greater London.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Colindale, and your engine started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Your filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Maybe returning from Colindale Park, or midway across Colindale, the engine might go lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or stall.

When you safely can, stop and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M1, under a mile from Colindale, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Colindale to the car park by Colindale Library is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

If it is noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.

## Colindale: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street by Hangar 1, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your car has come to rest in Colindale, our engineers travel to it.

The work depends on three replies, which our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one after that tank is drained, right there.

A careful flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not clear out by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when the engine hasn't run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the fuel system is bled with new diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, by Hendon or on a drive around Colindale.

It is checked on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers go.

As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## About Colindale, for a moment

Colindale is a suburban area in northwest London, situated near the River Brent and the Welsh Harp reservoir. Colindale sits at an elevation of around 48 metres, approximately 8 miles from central London. Colindale is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing and is surrounded by other suburban areas, including Grahame Park and The Hyde. Colindale has a population of around 20,665 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Greater London, Colindale included

AdBlue call-outs around Colindale are passed to vans that serve the places around it — Grahame Park, The Hyde plus Burnt Oak — and most of Greater London further out, across NW postcodes.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

Colindale is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Colindale: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each jobs differ, a single price would not be fair.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Greentop Young Persons Activity Centre.

That's why each call from Colindale starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those replies narrow a range down to a single figure.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the price on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
