# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Collaton: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Stop reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits in Collaton.

Reading in advance? Then what follows covers how it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels around Lower Batson, as well as Collaton, run on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Collaton: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Collaton Road, perhaps outside The Royal Oak on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it in Malborough or right in the heart of Collaton.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Collaton or a drive out in Woolston. Seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Ivybridge.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever around Devon the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside Portlemore Lane on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Finish once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using its own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Collaton?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Asda Express, Gulf or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push your car away if asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Collaton.

When the motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

On the M5, under 50 miles from Collaton, that means the next junction.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Collaton makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Plymouth — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers turn up in Collaton

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Malborough with South Huish Church of England Primary School, near Site of Historic Mansion or on your own driveway.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers decide the work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.

Then your tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Then our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly before we go.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

Collaton is a coastal area, and our vans that cover it also work the towns around it, Higher Batson and Batson among them, across the TQ postcode area.

The vehicle does not need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Millennium Wood, a side street close to Malborough Village Hall: we drain the car where it stands.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Baptist Church? By a border? Asking beats assuming, so phone.

## The short version for Collaton drivers

Pour no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Keep it switched off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, throughout Devon.
