# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Collier Row

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts until your engine pulls it through.

In Collier Row, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Collier Row, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone switching the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not throw it away.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting RM5 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Turning the key to ignition alone starts the pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is wasted.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance along Hampden Road.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Ask the attendants to help you move your car off the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Collier Row, whether it is the Esso or somewhere else.

On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its fuel from.

When your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, which is how a car filled in Alderwood Terrace last night and not switched on stays the straightforward case, provided no one touches the key.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; and, since it eats at some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle parked in Collier Row. Only in your tank, it stays the same.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the main fault.

No damage is done while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates back out — and the next fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Collier Row or out in Havering-atte-Bower, does more harm than almost any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, anywhere your car has stopped around Greater London.

## Collier Row: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. No one intends it.

A container bought when heading home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Clockhouse Primary School the refill is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off B174.

One more version: dim light, a pub car park outside The Colley Rowe Inn, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers know least.

Wherever you're in Collier Row or the remainder of Greater London, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Collier Row, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

Via the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Lawns Park or halfway across Collier Row.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep it off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M25, under 5 miles from Collier Row, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Collier Row to the car park by North Romford Community Association is a very different job from a run towards London, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

When it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Collier Row

Anywhere it has come to rest around Collier Row — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Collier Row Library — the van comes to your car.

The work rests on three replies, which our engineers get first — what got in, the amount, and if your engine has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear away on its own.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last.

You set off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in Collier Row or in a bay by Romford.

Before leaving, we check it's running properly with fresh diesel in.

As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Greater London, Collier Row included

AdBlue call-outs around Collier Row are passed to vans that cover the towns near it — Rise Park, Chase Cross as well as Marks Gate — and much of Greater London further out, throughout RM postcodes.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Anywhere your vehicle stands — a drive at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; that suits Collier Row, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Collier Row

Not one single figure could be honest, since each job is different.

What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind The Ascension, Collier Row.

For that reason, every call from Collier Row opens with the same trio — which fluid was put in, how much, whether it ran — before a figure.

Those replies shrink a range right down to one number.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Still next to the car in Collier Row?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Collier Row or anywhere within Greater London, after you call 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether it ran.
