# Colts Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Colts Green.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Colts Green and Dodington carry, with diesel feeding the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Colts Green

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Badminton Road, perhaps outside The Bell on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar cars come second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it happens in Smarts Green or the middle of Colts Green, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Colts Green forecourt or a driveway out in Little Sodbury End, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Yate.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across Gloucestershire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Station Close, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Step five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Colts Green?

Short order, then. First: the engine stays off.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Gulf, Esso or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear if asked.

On your own drive around Colts Green? Then your car remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is the place to leave if you are on the M4, under 3 miles from Colts Green.

## When our technicians turn up in Colts Green, what happens?

By St John's Mead Church of England Primary School, close to St Lawrence or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because those replies decide the work and price.

Nobody heads out before you've had our quote over the phone.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Then our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
