# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Columbjohn? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the engine off then leave your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Columbjohn.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Columbjohn: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call just where you are. Say a EX5 4 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- Shifting your car just a short way is no reason to start your engine.

- Switching your key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch along Columbjohn Bridge.

- Draining the tank on your own beside the road isn't worth trying.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Columbjohn forecourt you're on, the Murco included.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

No part in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to go that way.

It does not blend. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ratsloe last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it touches until it's removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny channels.

A vehicle left sitting in Columbjohn with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

And there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Sainsbury's and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Mixed through the diesel and left still, it's no threat at that stage; running the motor does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Netherexe or the centre of Columbjohn alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Wherever around Devon the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Columbjohn?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs invite it.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Stoke Canon Church of England Primary School and Pre-School.

Close to Crosspark, a driver pours a bottle in at home after work.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at the pub in the village, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it switched off: that's the first response to the same slip, wherever in Columbjohn or the remainder of Devon you are.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Columbjohn?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Folly Park or halfway across Columbjohn.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Columbjohn lies under 3 miles from the M5; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Columbjohn to park beside the centre and a drive of under 10 miles for Exeter are very distinct jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Caught early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Columbjohn: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest around Columbjohn — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road by Lost mansion — the van travels to the car.

Three answers decide the job, and so first we ask which fluid got in, about what quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because residue will not flush away unaided.

After that, the filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the car.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Pinhoe or on a driveway around Columbjohn.

Before we leave, we confirm it's running smoothly with new diesel in.

Since the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

At the end, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Devon, Columbjohn included

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or somewhere tricky to describe; phone and ask.

Columbjohn is a rural hamlet, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Columbjohn?

Each job is different, so not one fixed price is fair.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Folly.

That's why each call from Columbjohn starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
