# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Colyford

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine hasn't turned, it is drained and fully cleaned where the car sits in Colyford.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it happens and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your motor — but many newer diesels seen around Colyford and Axmouth hold a second fluid too.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Colyford: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Swan Hill Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Wheelwright.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour starts, no part halts it.

St Dympnas or the heart of Colyford: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Kingsdon or a forecourt around Colyford.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark what goes in which filler right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Axminster, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever you are in Devon — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of A3052, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The two behind one flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel side is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel filler remained closed throughout. After that, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Colyford?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Tower Services, the Tesco or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Colyford, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M5, under 25 miles from Colyford, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Colyford is less a job than a trip of under 25 miles towards Exeter, and so tell us.

## What happens when we turn up in Colyford

By Colyton Primary Academy, near Colyford Village Hall or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those answers set the work and price.

Nobody heads out before you have had our price over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the system rinsed thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing clears out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

After the filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel is added, and finally your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Wherever it sits — beside Chapel of St Michael, in a layby en route to Elizabeth Road Playing Field, at home — that's where it gets cleared.
