# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Common Side: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Common Side, catching it before your motor runs normally leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels around Elm Tree Hill, like those in Common Side, carry on two fluids; your motor gets just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, again and again.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

It's in the gap that the error happens.

## Common Side: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Chatsworth Park Rise, or heading home in the car park at The New Inn.

Unfamiliar motors are next, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and once the pour begins, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Common Side or out in Gleadless.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Gleadless Townend or a forecourt around Common Side, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Darnall's car park, say — rather than when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in South Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Chatsworth Park Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop once that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently using its own spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Common Side: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, Asda or another forecourt will normally help pushing the car away when asked.

Your own drive around Common Side is the place it should stay.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then switch off.

Leave the M1 — under 5 miles out of Common Side — at the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Common Side.

## When our technicians turn up in Common Side, what happens?

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it by Gleadless Primary School, beside Gleadless United Reformed Church or at home, the van comes to it.

The answers decide this work and the price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

During the call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of dispatch.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. Hence it counts more.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains around Common Side, and South Yorkshire beyond

Common Side is a residential suburb, and our vans that cover it also work the towns around it, Hurl Field and Intake among them, across the S postcode area.

A postcode starting S12 2 gets our van to you fastest.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Wherever it sits — near Gleadless War Memorial, on a lay-by en route to Hollinsend Park, at home — that's where it is drained.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Christ Church? By a border? Checking is better than guessing, and so phone.

## For Common Side drivers, the short version

Always, the cap; then, the pour.
