# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Copley

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where the vehicle sits around Copley, is usually what it takes when found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Copley and Salterhebble carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Copley?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Copley Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Volunteer Arms on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Copley or out in Skircoat Green.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Copley or a drive out in Pickwood Scar. Seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Halifax? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere in West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Copley Mount.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Copley?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the JET or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Copley.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Leave the M62 — under 3 miles out of Copley — at the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Copley makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Bradford — so say about how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up in Copley, what occurs?

The van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Old Crossleyans RUFC, or outside Copley Primary School.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, because those replies decide the work and the quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need about half an hour after we are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Quote a postcode beginning HX3 0, and our van arrives fastest.

No need to shift your car.

Anywhere it stands — near All Saints, on a lay-by en route to Copley Park, at home — that is where it gets emptied.

Assuming won't help behind Skircoat Library, close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to pin down; phone and ask.

## In short, for Copley people
