# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Coton Farm: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is around Coton Farm.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels around The Leys, as well as Coton Farm, run on two fluids; the engine takes just the diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for every tank.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two together under one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Coton Farm: how it takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Gerard before work, or in the car park outside The Coton Arms on the way home.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Coton Farm or out in Coton Green.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Coton Farm forecourt or a drive out in Gillway, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Tamworth.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around Staffordshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Ariane.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using its own spout.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Coton Farm already?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Sainsbury's, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

Your own drive in Coton Farm is the place it stays.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M6 Toll, under 5 miles from Coton Farm, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Coton Farm is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles to Lichfield, so say.

## Coton Farm: what occurs when our technicians arrive

By Coton Green Primary School, close to The Fitness Hub or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask since the replies set both work and quote.

Nobody heads out before you have heard the price by phone.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
