# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Court Orchard: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, keep your ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Court Orchard.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Court Orchard and Pymore carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Court Orchard: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Allington Mead before work, or in the car park at Oddfellows Arms on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Court Orchard or out in Allington.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in New Zealand or a forecourt in Court Orchard, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Maiden Newton's car park, perhaps — not once the light appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever across Dorset the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Longhayes Avenue, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Both under one flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel filler is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Skip step five entirely.

## Court Orchard: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Morrisons or somewhere else.

Your own driveway around Court Orchard is where it stays.

Already started? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

## When our technicians turn up in Court Orchard, what happens?

Wherever your car came to rest, be it outside St Catherine's Roman Catholic School, near St. Swithun's Church or at home, the van comes to it.

The answers determine the work and our price, so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

On the call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel is added, and then the car gets tested.

Before we leave, our technicians start the car and check that it's running correctly.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
