# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cove

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Cove.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Cove: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not throw it out.

- Give us a postcode starting GU14 9, or whichever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is pointless.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch along St John's Road.

- Draining that tank yourself beside the road is not one to try.

Moving the car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Cove forecourt you are on, the Morrisons or any other.

On the drive, the car remains just as it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, treating what your engine lets out.

Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Fox Lane yesterday and not started remains the simple one, provided no one turns the key.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

A vehicle left standing around Cove with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

A fault of thin fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Esso.

No harm is done as long as it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Farnborough or the middle of Cove.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever around Hampshire your car sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cove: how it ends up there

It's not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

A container bought while driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

The top-up is hurried outside Cove Junior School, because the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Church Lane.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Plough & Horses.

Rented cars, brand-new motors, fleet motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it most.

Wherever in Hampshire, Cove included, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Cove?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been sucked through the filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Maybe returning from Birchwood Reserve, or part way across Cove, the motor might go lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or stall.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M3, under a mile from Cove, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Cove to park near St John the Baptist and a drive of under 50 miles towards Winchester are such different jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been run.

Noticed early, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Cove: what it takes

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a road near St Christopher, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Cove, and our van comes to it.

Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run, because those answers determine this work.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol.

Testing your vehicle comes last, after clean diesel is added and your filter is cleaned or, where needed, swapped.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step.

Whether it is a parking bay by Farnborough Main or a drive around Cove, that is where we start it and you drive off.

Our engineers check it runs smoothly on new diesel before leaving.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Cove and where it is

Cove is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 69 metres. Cove lies within the South East region of England, approximately 31.7 miles from London and 28.1 miles from the nearby city of Winchester. Cove is characterised by its semi-detached housing and is surrounded by nearby places such as West Heath, Southwood, and Rafborough. Cove has a population of around 7647 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Cove and Hampshire

West Heath, Southwood and Rafborough are among the towns near Cove that the same teams reach, together with much of Hampshire further out, over the GU postcode area.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

Cove is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cove: the cost of fixing it

No single figure could be honest, because each job is different.

Three things change the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Our Lady Of Lourdes Church.

Before any figure, not afterwards, each call from Cove begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if it ran.

Once they are known, a range turns into a single fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you are told our quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## Still next to your car in Cove?

Then, touch nothing — that's the best step there is.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Cove or anywhere in Hampshire.
