# Cowbridge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your engine off then leave your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

Being water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes when your pump begins drawing it.

In Cowbridge, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Cowbridge: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do:

- Pull your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Ring just where you are. Say a CF71 7 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: the motor stays off.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance along High Street.

- By the road, don't try draining it yourself.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Cowbridge forecourt you are on, the Esso or any other.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very spot the pickup sucks from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in New Beaupre overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out.

A motor left sitting in Cowbridge with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Murco and you have a fault of thin fuel.

No damage is done as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other mistake — in Aberthin or the heart of Cowbridge equally.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Anywhere in The Vale of Glamorgan the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## Cowbridge: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap — can look the same. No one intends it; many layouts invite it.

It mostly occurs at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off North Road.

Else, in dim light by Horse & Groom, your vehicle gets topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it switched off: that is the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere around Cowbridge or the remainder of The Vale of Glamorgan you happen to be.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cowbridge, and the motor started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may show up, maybe part way across Cowbridge or coming back from Cowbridge Physic Gardens.

No starting it again to test: pull over when safe, then switch it off.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M4, under 5 miles from Cowbridge, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Cowbridge to the car park by Cowbridge Town Hall is a very different job from a run towards Cardiff, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where your car has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is noticed quickly.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Cowbridge

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Cowbridge: a side street near Cowbridge & District Museum, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What got in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the work.

Then the tank is cleared where your car sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since residue will not flush away unaided.

Testing your vehicle follows at the end, after fresh diesel is added and the filter is cleaned or, where necessary, swapped.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on new diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, by Llantwit Major or on a driveway around Cowbridge.

We make sure it runs properly on new diesel before leaving.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

No moving is needed. In Cowbridge, a riverside town, a van that comes to you fits: your car is drained on the spot, be it on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## Cowbridge: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Holy Cross Church.

That's why every call from Cowbridge starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it's run.

Their replies narrow a range right down to one number.

Our quote is given during the call, before anyone leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Check your policy whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
