# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cowpe

Stop reading a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your vehicle sits around Cowpe.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — yet many newer diesels seen round Cowpe and Hey Head hold a second fluid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Cowpe

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

On a driveway off Cowpe Road before work, or in the car park at Duke of Buccleuch heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the pour starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Cowpe or out in Hugh Mill.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Booth Fold or a forecourt in Cowpe.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Walsden? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lancashire that is.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside Lumb Holes Lane at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check once more — confirm your diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Cowpe?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive around Cowpe? Then the car stays where it is.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

On the M66, under 3 miles from Cowpe, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Salford, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Cowpe.

## Cowpe: what occurs when our technicians get there

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Waterfoot Primary School, close to Bamboo Theatre or on your own driveway.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those answers decide both work and quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes out unaided, however long it is left.

Once the filter has been flushed — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then your vehicle is tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs smoothly, all before we go.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.

## Cowpe and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over BB postcodes, the vans that cover Cowpe — a village — work the surrounding spots too, Glen Top and Waterfoot among them.

A postcode starting BB4 7 gets the van to you fastest.

No need to shift the vehicle.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Edgeside Park, a side street close to St Nicholas with St John & St Michael: our engineers drain the car where it sits.

Assuming won't help at the back of Holy Trinity, on a border, or somewhere hard to pin down; ring and check.

## In short, for Cowpe motorists

Read the cap before you tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere around Lancashire.
