# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cowplain? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The harm begins once it is sucked through your pump — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully purged where the vehicle sits in Cowplain.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Cowplain, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not bin it away.

- Ring right where you are. Say a PO8 8 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the car.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance down Masefield Crescent.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle off the island if you are at a forecourt around Cowplain, whether it's the Esso or somewhere else.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Eastland Gate last night and never started stays the straightforward case, as long as no one touches the key.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there.

A vehicle left sitting around Cowplain with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and the issue is thinned fuel.

No harm comes as long as it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Horndean or the middle of Cowplain.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever across Hampshire your vehicle sits.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Cowplain

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. No one means it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The refill is rushed outside Woodcroft Primary, after the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were taken in.

Someone tips the bottle in outside their house, just off Milton Road, as the day ends.

Otherwise, after dark by The Spotted Cow, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet motors, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars see it the most.

Anywhere around Hampshire, Cowplain included, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cowplain?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Via your filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Wecock Common, say, or midway across Cowplain.

Once safe, stop and switch everything off — without turning it on again to test.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the Waterlooville Bypass, under 3 miles from Cowplain, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so driving for Portsmouth, under 10 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Cowplain to the car park by The Hart Plain Church.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Spotted early, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Cowplain: what it takes

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Saint Wilfrid's, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Cowplain, and the van travels to it.

Which fluid went in, about how much, and whether the motor has turned over: we ask first, since those shape the work.

Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, outside Rowlands Castle or on a driveway around Cowplain.

Our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel before we leave.

Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

At the end, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Cowplain and Hampshire

Over the PO postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Cowplain reach most of Hampshire too, Wecock, Lovedean and Honeywood Mews among them.

Near a boundary, or somewhere tricky to explain? Asking beats guessing, so ring.

No moving is needed. In Cowplain, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is drained where it stands, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Cowplain?

No single price would be honest, because every job differs.

What changes the cost is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Cowplain Activity Centre.

That is why each call from Cowplain starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

When they are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

As our engineer is on the way, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Still beside your car around Cowplain?

Then, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and if it ran is everything we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Hampshire, Cowplain too.
