# Craigens: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through the lines — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Craigens, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Craigens: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Pull the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not bin it out.

- Give us a postcode starting KA18 3, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: your engine remains off.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance down Cairnscadden Road.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Rolling the car off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Craigens forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station included.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly as it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

No part inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its supply from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Cumnock last night and has not turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — though it would be the first thing through once the motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; and, since it eats at some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle parked around Craigens. Only in your tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the JET.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Lugar or the middle of Craigens.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in East Ayrshire the car is standing.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Craigens: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts allow it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Someone pours the bottle in at home, right off Craigens Road, as the day ends.

Another version: darkness, a pub car park outside the pub in the village, and someone using that flap the first time.

Hired motors, new motors, company cars, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it most.

Keep it off: that's the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Craigens or the remainder of East Ayrshire you are.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Craigens?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through the filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Shankston Wood, perhaps, or part way across Craigens.

When you safely can, stop then turn it off — without restarting to see.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M77, under 25 miles from Craigens, by the next junction and stop safely, not driving on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving for Glasgow, under 50 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Craigens to the car park by Netherthird Community Centre.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been started there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's spotted quickly.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Craigens: what it takes

The car remains put, whether that is a road beside Stonepark Monument, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Craigens, and our van travels to it.

The job rests on three replies, and our technicians get before all else — what went in, the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is emptied, on the spot.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, if the motor has not run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes last.

After that our technicians start it and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Auchinleck or a drive in Craigens.

The test before our engineers head off is that it runs properly on clean diesel.

Because the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue drains across East Ayrshire, Craigens included

Netherthird, Barshare and Logan are among the towns around Craigens that the same vans reach, together with most of East Ayrshire beyond, over the KA postcode area.

Phone and ask rather than guess if you're by a county line, or anywhere tricky to explain.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — your driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Craigens, a rural village, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Craigens

There is no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind War Memorial.

What was put in, how much, and whether the engine ran: each Craigens call begins with exactly that, ahead of any quote, not after.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

While our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Craigens: still next to the car?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Craigens or anywhere in East Ayrshire.
