# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cranley Gardens: Why It Happens

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, when your engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits around Cranley Gardens.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels in Coldfall, like those in Cranley Gardens, run on two liquids; your motor gets only the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

There is a filler on each tank.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Cranley Gardens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Ellington Road before work, or in the car park at The Famous Royal Oak on the way home.

New-to-you cars are second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Fortis Green or right in the centre of Cranley Gardens.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Cranley Gardens or a driveway over in Muswell Hill. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Alexandra Palace? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever around Greater London the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush beside Woodland Rise at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Both under a single flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Cranley Gardens: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Cranley Gardens.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next junction is where to come off if you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Cranley Gardens.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards London, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Cranley Gardens.

## Cranley Gardens: what occurs when we turn up

The van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Royal British Legion, or outside St James Church of England Primary School.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide the work and price.

The quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Saint James', a lay-by on the way to Parkland Walk Local Nature Reserve, a drive.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Muswell Hill Centre.
