# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Crimchard: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Keep the motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Crimchard.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads about Crimchard and Chardleigh Green carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Crimchard: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Crimchard before work, or in the car park outside The Choughs heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a new motor.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

Chard or the heart of Crimchard: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Jocelyn Park or a forecourt around Crimchard.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors mark what belongs in each inlet just there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — at Axminster's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Somerset that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Laurel Gardens.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then look once more — confirm the diesel cap remained shut throughout. Only then, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Crimchard?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Tesco or another — the staff will normally help push your car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Crimchard.

Where the engine has run by now, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

The next exit is where to come off if you are on the M5, under 10 miles from Crimchard.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Exeter, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Crimchard.

## What happens when we arrive around Crimchard

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Chard Museum, or by The Redstart Primary School.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those answers determine this work and the quote.

No one sets off until you have had our quote over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Before we leave, our engineers start the engine and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians arrive, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
