# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cronton: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Cronton.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Cronton and Ball o Ditton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Cronton: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Chapel Lane, or at Dandelion Tavern on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar car.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Upton Rocks or the middle of Cronton: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, on a forecourt in Cronton or a drive out in Farnworth. Seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Hough Green.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere across Merseyside, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush beside Cronton Road on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look again — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Cronton: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor stays off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Shell, Texaco or another forecourt will usually help pushing your car away if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Cronton, leave the vehicle where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M62, under a mile from Cronton, that means the next exit.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Cronton makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards Liverpool — so say roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we turn up in Cronton

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Cronton Church of England Primary Academy, beside Holy Family Church or at home, our van comes to it.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since the replies decide the work and our price.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it counts more.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
