# Crosby: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where the vehicle sits in Crosby, is usually what it needs if caught before your motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the engine — but many current diesels driven about Crosby and Great Crosby hold a second liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both together under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Crosby: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off South Road before work, or in the car park outside The Liver Hotel on the way home.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Waterloo Park or the middle of Crosby: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Brighton le Sands or a forecourt in Crosby, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Waterloo (Merseyside)? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere around Merseyside, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Crosby Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly through the built-in spout.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Crosby already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Texaco, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Crosby.

When the engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe and switch it off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you are on the M57, under 5 miles from Crosby.

A short hop across Crosby is a smaller job than a run towards Liverpool, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Crosby: what occurs when our engineers turn up

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Waterloo Primary School, near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or on your own driveway.

The replies decide the work and our quote, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

No one heads out until you've heard the price over the phone.

Then the tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## About Crosby, for a moment

Crosby is a coastal town in Merseyside, situated approximately 5 miles north of Liverpool. Crosby sits at a low elevation of around 17 metres, with views out to the Irish Sea. Crosby has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Crosby is close to nearby attractions such as Waterloo Park and Seaforth.

## AdBlue drains around Crosby and across Merseyside

Throughout L postcodes, our teams covering Crosby — a coastal town — work the surrounding locations too, Seaforth and Waterloo included.

A postcode starting L22 0 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle does not need to move.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to The Marine Garden, a side street close to Plaza: we drain the car where it stands.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Crosby Library.

## In short, for Crosby motorists

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere around Merseyside.
