# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Crosspool

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Crosspool, catching it before your engine runs usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of modern diesels driven around Crosspool and Sandygate hold another liquid as well.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Crosspool?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Sandygate Road before work, or in the car park outside The Sportsman on the way home.

New-to-you motors are next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

No part halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Stephen Hill or the middle of Crosspool, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Tapton Hill or a forecourt in Crosspool, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Sheffield? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere around South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Watt Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two behind a single flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel filler is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Crosspool?

Short list, then. Top of that: your engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Esso, JET or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car clear if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Crosspool.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Crosspool sits under 10 miles from the M1; there, use the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Crosspool.

## When we get there in Crosspool, what occurs?

Outside Lydgate Infant School, near St Columba or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Those answers determine the work and our quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run.

On the call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and the system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

The motor is started next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we go.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Shifting the vehicle is not needed.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Stephen Hill Methodist Church, a lay-by on the way to Lydgate Green, a driveway.
