# Crumlin: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes when your pump starts drawing it.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Crumlin.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Crumlin: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Pull your keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not bin it away.

- Give us a postcode starting BT29 4, or whatever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Do not:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch up Heugh Road.

- Draining your tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

The staff working at any Crumlin forecourt — the the nearest petrol station among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in Dundrod yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though once the engine turns, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Once it is sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Crumlin leaves it worse. Inside that tank only, waiting does nothing.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the another forecourt nearby, and this issue is thinned fuel.

Mixed through your diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; using the motor does the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Lower Ballinderry or the centre of Crumlin equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Wherever across County Antrim your car has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Crumlin: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Someone pours the container in at home, just off Chalet Road, as the day ends.

One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside the pub in the village, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere around County Antrim, Crumlin included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Crumlin?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

It's been pulled through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from the green space at the edge of the village or halfway across Crumlin.

No starting it again to check: pull over once safe, then turn everything off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M77, over 50 miles from Crumlin, at the first junction and park somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Crumlin to the car park by the centre is a very different job from a run towards Lisburn, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

Permanent damage is very rare when it's noticed quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Crumlin: what it takes

Anywhere it has stopped around Crumlin — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road beside a street just off the centre — our van comes to the vehicle.

The work depends on three replies, which we ask for before all else — what was put in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one after your tank is drained, right there.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to bleed the system on new diesel.

Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at the nearest station or on a driveway around Crumlin.

The test before we go is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## Crumlin and County Antrim: AdBlue drains across the area

Aldergrove, Glenavy and Killead are among the towns near Crumlin that the same teams reach, together with most of County Antrim further out, over the BT postcode area.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

No moving is needed. In Crumlin, a small village, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is drained where it stands, be it in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Crumlin?

Because the jobs differ, a flat figure would not be fair.

Three things change the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind the far end of the built-up part.

What was put in, what quantity, and if it ran: each Crumlin enquiry begins by asking exactly that, before any figure, never afterwards.

Those replies shrink a range right down to a single figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside the vehicle in Crumlin?
