# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Crystal Palace

Leave the engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, if the engine hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Crystal Palace.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers how it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads about Crystal Palace and Upper Sydenham carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two together behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Crystal Palace?

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Ledrington Road, or heading home in the car park outside Westow House.

Unfamiliar motors are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Anerley or right in the heart of Crystal Palace.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Sydenham or a forecourt in Crystal Palace.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many vehicles show what belongs in which inlet just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever in Greater London the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Orchard Grove, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Crystal Palace?

Short list, then. First: the motor remains unstarted.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Asda, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Crystal Palace.

Where the engine has been run already, stop safely then turn it off.

Crystal Palace sits under 15 miles from the M4; there, use the first exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Crystal Palace is less a job than a trip of under 10 miles towards Westminster, so tell us.

## Crystal Palace: what occurs when we turn up

Outside Paxton Primary School, close to Joseph Paxton or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those replies set both work and price.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle is tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before we go.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
