# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cullercoats: Why It Happens

Leave the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Cullercoats.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of current diesels seen around Cullercoats and Preston carry another fluid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Cullercoats?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Grand Parade, or on the way home in the car park outside Cullercoats Crescent Club.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Marden or the middle of Cullercoats: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Preston Grange or a forecourt around Cullercoats.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Seaton Delaval.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Tyne and Wear the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Beverley Gardens.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The two behind a single flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Cullercoats: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of it: the engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Shell, Morrisons or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car away if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Cullercoats.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

Leave the A194(M) — under 10 miles out of Cullercoats — at the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Cullercoats makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Newcastle upon Tyne — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians arrive around Cullercoats, what takes place?

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Cullercoats Primary School, close to St George's or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, because those answers determine this work and the quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of it washes away on its own, however long it sits.

Once your filter has been flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and finally your vehicle gets tested.

After that we start the car and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
