# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Custards

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens till your engine pulls it round.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully cleaned where your car sits around Custards.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Custards

Things to do:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, take your keys away.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting SO43 7, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance up Pemberton Road.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

Get the attendants to help you roll your vehicle off the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Custards, whether it's the Esso or elsewhere.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Emery Down last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

After it's sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car parked around Custards. Only in your tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the main issue.

Mixed into your diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; running the motor is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits again — and the following tankful will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Custards or out in Bank, costs more than nearly any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever in Hampshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Custards

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

A bottle bought when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The top-up gets hurried outside St Michael and All Angels CofE Infant School, after your dash lit up with a warning as the children were taken in.

Close to Clarence Road, someone pours a container in at home in the evening.

Or a driver new to that flap refills the car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The White Rabbit.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a fleet motor, or the spare motor in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people use the least.

Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Custards or the remainder of Hampshire.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Custards?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

Perhaps coming back from Coles Mead Recreation Ground, or midway across Custards, the engine may go rough, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Custards lies under 5 miles from the M27; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Hopping across Custards to the car park by Our Lady of the Assumption and Edward the Confessor Catholic Church is one thing; heading towards Southampton, under 10 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once your engine has run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Custards: what it takes

The vehicle remains put, whether that's a road beside New Forest Museum, a drive, a layby or a filling station in Custards, and our van comes to it.

The work depends on three answers, and we ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if your engine has turned over.

Then the tank is drained where the car sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains won't wash away on its own.

A test of your vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced.

About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the engine hasn't run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes last.

Whether it is a parking bay by Ashurst New Forest or a drive around Custards, that is where we start the car and you head off.

Our engineers check it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we go.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Custards itself

Custards is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 37 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Custards lies approximately 7.7 miles from Southampton and 76.3 miles from London, placing it within the wider South East England region. Custards is surrounded by nearby places such as Lyndhurst, Pikes Hill, and Goose Green, and has a population of around 1885 residents. Custards forms a quiet residential community with a mix of local amenities and rural scenery.

## AdBlue drains across Custards and Hampshire

Lyndhurst, Pikes Hill and Goose Green are among the towns around Custards that the same teams serve, together with much of Hampshire further out, over the SO postcode area.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of assuming.

No moving is needed. In Custards, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is drained where it stands, whether on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Custards?

Because each jobs vary, a single price would not be fair.

Three things change the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Lyndhurst Library.

Ahead of any quote, not after, every call from Custards begins with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and if it ran.

Given them, a range narrows to a single firm number.

The quote is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Beside the vehicle around Custards, still?

In that case, do nothing — that's the best step available.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Custards or wherever within Hampshire, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if it ran.
