# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cyntwell: Why It Occurs

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

In Cyntwell, finding it before the engine turns usually leaves draining and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels on the roads round Cyntwell and Ely carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, again and again.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Cyntwell?

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Haig Place before work, or in the car park outside Coopers Carvery on the way home.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Cyntwell or out in Culverhouse Cross.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Drope or a forecourt around Cyntwell, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- The handbook says which it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Waun-Gron Park's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are in Cardiff — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Cambria Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Stop when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using its own spout.

- Shut the cap, then look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Cyntwell already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

If you're on your own driveway around Cyntwell, leave it where it stands.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then switch off.

The next exit is where to leave when you're on the M4, under 5 miles from Cyntwell.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Cyntwell is smaller a job than a trip of under 5 miles towards Cardiff, so say.

## Our arrival in Cyntwell, and what takes place next

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near Dusty Forge or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

After that our engineers fire it up and check it runs smoothly before we leave.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

Draining takes place right there, whether a drive, a street by Dusty Shed, or a lay-by towards Hywel Dda Park.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Bethel Presbyterian Church.
