# Dafen: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The harm starts once it's sucked through your lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully rinsed where the vehicle stands in Dafen.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Dafen, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Remove the keys, which prevents someone switching the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting SA14 8, or simply the name of a street close by, so call from the car.

Things not to do:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, so it's pointless.

- Even a short distance up Llys Cilsaig is too far to drive the car.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Dafen forecourt — the Shell among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

Kept in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — quite unlike fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Penceiliogi overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of your tank, untouched — but it would be first through once your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

It attacks some metals used in fuel components, attacking whatever it touches till it's removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

By daybreak, a car sitting in Dafen with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's just in your tank, it doesn't.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Blended through the diesel and left still, it is harmless at that stage; running the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't just be run through, because it does not burn.

Whether your car is in Penallt or the centre of Dafen, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Anywhere around Carmarthenshire the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## Dafen: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed.

Someone tips the container in outside their house, just off Clos Cilsaig, as the day ends.

Otherwise, in dim light outside Beer Park, the vehicle gets refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

Rented cars, new cars, company cars, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it most.

Same slip, same first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Dafen or the remainder of Carmarthenshire.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Dafen, and the motor started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Through your filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Penygaer Playing Fields or halfway across Dafen.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off rather than restarting it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M4, under 5 miles from Dafen, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Mileage matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system, so driving for Swansea, under 10 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Dafen to the car park by St Michael and All Angels.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been running.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught early.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Dafen: what it takes

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Dafen: a side street close to Capel Y Bryn, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, so first our technicians ask which fluid got in, about what quantity, and whether your engine has run.

Then the tank is drained where the car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

After that, your filter: flushed, or changed if it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a test of the vehicle.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with clean diesel.

You head off as soon as our technicians have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Dafen or in a space outside Llanelli.

It is tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our engineers leave.

As the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Carmarthenshire, Dafen included

Throughout the SA postcode area, the teams taking AdBlue call-outs in Dafen reach much of Carmarthenshire too, Pemberton, Halfway and Capel included.

Near a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking beats assuming, so phone.

Dafen is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Dafen: the cost of fixing it

Each job differs, so no single quote would be honest.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Felinfoel Baptistery.

What was put in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Dafen call begins by asking precisely that, before a figure, not afterwards.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Dafen: still alongside the car?

Not touching your car is, right now, the best move you can do.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Dafen or anywhere around Carmarthenshire.
