# Daisy Hill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully flushed where the vehicle is in Daisy Hill.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Well Hill, as well as Daisy Hill, run on two fluids; the motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Daisy Hill: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

On a drive off Croft House Mews before work, or in the car park at The Miner's Arms heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar motors are second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Troy Hill or the middle of Daisy Hill: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Town End or a forecourt around Daisy Hill, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Morley? Ask whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, wherever in West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Margaret Close, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip slowly using its own spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Daisy Hill?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Morrisons or anywhere else.

On your own drive in Daisy Hill? So the vehicle remains where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Daisy Hill lies under a mile from the M621; there, use the next junction.

A short hop across Daisy Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Daisy Hill: what occurs when our engineers arrive

Wherever the car came to rest, be it by Seven Hills Primary School, near St Peter's, Morley or at home, our van travels to it.

The replies settle this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

During the call itself, you hear our quote — before anything else.

Then your tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of the car.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Morley Church of Christ.

## In short, for Daisy Hill drivers

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave it off and call 0333 366 0103.
