# Dalneigh: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts until the motor sucks it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Dalneigh, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Dalneigh: the first few minutes

Do:

- Pull the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting IV3 5, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to reposition your car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down St John's Avenue.

- Draining your tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

On a forecourt in Dalneigh, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car clear of the petrol pump.

At home, the vehicle remains just where it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes straight to your exhaust, treating what the motor emits.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in Glebe yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when the engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

A car left standing in Dalneigh with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and this issue is diluted fuel.

No harm comes while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether your car sits in Merkinch or the centre of Dalneigh, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Highland the vehicle is sitting.

## Dalneigh: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off St. Ninian Drive.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside Thistle Inn.

Rented cars, new cars, fleet motors, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it the most.

Wherever across Highland, Dalneigh as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.

## Dalneigh: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

It has been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Perhaps coming back from Northern Meeting Park, or midway across Dalneigh, the motor might run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up the dash or cut out.

Once safe, pull over then turn it off — with no turning it on again to see.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Dalneigh, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Dalneigh to park near James Cameron Community Centre and a drive of under a mile for Inverness are very different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Permanent damage is very rare when it's spotted quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Dalneigh?

A road beside Cameron Youth Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere your car has come to rest around Dalneigh, our engineers travel to it.

The work depends on three replies, which our engineers ask for first — what went in, the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

Then your tank is drained where your car sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains will not wash away on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, if your engine has not run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the last step.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Dalneigh or in a space by Inverness.

The check before our engineers head off is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Dalneigh and where it is

Dalneigh is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Inverness, Scotland's northernmost city, with Dalneigh being close to the Moray Firth coastline. Dalneigh has a relatively low elevation of 11 metres above sea level and Dalneigh is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Dalneigh is located near other suburban areas such as Kinmylies and Ballifeary, with Dalneigh being part of the wider Inverness urban area.

## Dalneigh and Highland: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the IV postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Dalneigh reach most of Highland as well, Kinmylies, Ballifeary and Haugh among them.

Assuming won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to pin down; ring and ask.

No moving is needed. In Dalneigh, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: your vehicle is drained where it stands, be it in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Dalneigh?

There is no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind The Ledge Climbing Gym.

Which fluid went in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Dalneigh enquiry begins by asking precisely those, before a quote, not afterwards.

Their replies shrink the range down to a single number.

Before a van sets off, you are told our price on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Dalneigh: still beside the vehicle?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if the engine ran is everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Highland, Dalneigh too.
