# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dalston

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Being water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes when the pump begins drawing it.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully cleaned where your car stands in Dalston.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Dalston: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull your keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting E8 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: the motor stays off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.

- Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Laurel Street.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

The attendants working at any Dalston filling station — the BP included — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the same place the intake sucks from.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in De Beauvoir Town last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through if the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Once it's sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

A motor left sitting around Dalston with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Valero.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the next fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Dalston or out in Hackney, costs more than almost any other mistake.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in Greater London the vehicle has stopped.

## Dalston: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — may appear the same. No one means it; many designs allow it.

It usually occurs at home, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School.

A driver tips the container in at home, right off Queensbridge Road, as the day ends.

One more pattern: darkness, the car park by The Victoria, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new vehicle, a fleet car, or the spare motor in a family with one of each fuels — the vehicles people know least.

Anywhere around Greater London, Dalston included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

## Dalston: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via your filter, through the lines, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Maybe returning from Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, or midway across Dalston, the motor might go lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or cut out.

Once you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — with no restarting to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M11, under 10 miles from Dalston, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Dalston to park near Rhodes Estate Community Hall and a drive of under 3 miles towards London are such different jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been started there is more of it.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it's spotted soon.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Dalston: what it takes

A street beside Kurdish and Turkish Community Centre, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has stopped around Dalston, our technicians come to it.

Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, and if the motor has been run: we check before all else, because those decide the work.

Then the tank is drained where your car sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Next, the filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of the car.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, provided the motor has not run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with new diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay at Dalston Junction or a driveway in Dalston, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off.

Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Dalston

Dalston is a densely populated suburban area in north-east London, situated approximately 3.6 miles from the city centre. Dalston sits at a low elevation of around 20 metres, with its predominant housing stock consisting of flats. Dalston is located near other urban areas such as Kingsland, Hackney Central, and Shacklewell, and is home to a diverse population of around 22,613 people.

## AdBlue drains across Dalston and Greater London

AdBlue jobs around Dalston go to teams that cover the towns around it — Kingsland, Hackney Central plus Shacklewell — and much of Greater London further out, throughout E postcodes.

Near a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking is better than assuming, and so phone.

No towing is needed. In Dalston, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Dalston

Since the callouts vary, a single figure wouldn't be fair.

Three things move the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind Faith Tabernacle Church of God.

With that reason, every enquiry from Dalston begins with the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any figure.

Given those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## In Dalston and still next to the car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it ran are everything we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest throughout Greater London, Dalston included.
