# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Danestone: Why It Happens

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits around Danestone.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels around Hilton, like those in Danestone, run on two liquids; your engine takes only the diesel.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Danestone: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a drive off Laurel Drive before work, or in the car park at White Horse on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a strange motor.

Nothing halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Woodside or right in the heart of Danestone.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Danestone forecourt or a drive over in Bucksburn, take a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors show which belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Dyce's car park, say — not once the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever in Aberdeen City the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Mill Lade Wynd at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Never carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Danestone?

Short order, then. Top of it: the engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Tesco Extra, Esso or another forecourt will normally help pushing the car away if asked.

Your own driveway around Danestone is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Danestone sits over 50 miles from the M90; on it, use the next exit.

A short hop across Danestone is a smaller job than a run towards Aberdeen, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When we arrive around Danestone, what takes place?

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether by the local primary school, beside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or at home, the van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those replies decide the work and our quote.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

Once your filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then your car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

Quote a postcode that starts AB22 8, and the van arrives fastest.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Danestone Congregational Church, a lay-by on the way to Danestone Country Park, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Danestone Community Centre.

## In short, for Danestone drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Aberdeen City, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
