# Danygraig: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition as well.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it is sucked through the pump — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car stands around Danygraig.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Danygraig: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Pocket the keys, which stops anyone turning the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Which fluid, and about what amount? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can see.

- Give us a postcode starting NP11 6, or whatever street is closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along A467.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

On a forecourt in Danygraig, whether it is the Tesco or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Crosskeys yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when your motor runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

A vehicle left sitting around Danygraig with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main fault.

Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in the tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so watering it can't work. Hence the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Upper Ochrwyth or the heart of Danygraig equally.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across Caerphilly your vehicle has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Danygraig?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many designs invite it.

Usually it's not the filling station: a driver buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

A driver tips the container in at home, just off Tir-y-cwm Road, as the day ends.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at Railway Tavern, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new vehicle, a fleet car, or the spare car in a home with both fuels — the vehicles drivers use the least.

Keep it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, anywhere in Danygraig or the rest of Caerphilly you are.

## Danygraig: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

Via the filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Risca Park or halfway across Danygraig.

No restarting to check: stop when it is safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M4, under 5 miles from Danygraig, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, so driving for Newport, under 5 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing Danygraig to the car park by St John Ambulance Hall.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught soon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Danygraig: what it takes

The car stays put, whether that is a road near John C Hayward, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Danygraig, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run, since those answers settle this work.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of your car comes at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, where needed, replaced.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, if the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel.

You drive off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Danygraig or in a bay outside Risca & Pontymister.

Before leaving, we confirm it's running correctly with fresh diesel in.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

## About Danygraig

Danygraig is a small hamlet situated on the riverside in Caerphilly, with a relatively low elevation of 59 metres. Danygraig lies close to the city of Newport, which is approximately 4.9 miles away, and is near other local places such as Risca, Penrhiw, and Pontymister. Danygraig has a population of around 1158 people and predominantly features terraced housing.

## Danygraig and Caerphilly: AdBlue drains across the area

The vans that answer AdBlue calls in Danygraig also cover the locations about it, Risca, Penrhiw and Pontymister among them, and most of Caerphilly beyond, across the NP postcode area.

Assuming doesn't help by a county line or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.

Anywhere the car stands — a driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our engineers drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; that suits Danygraig, a rural hamlet, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Danygraig: the cost of fixing it

Because the jobs vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

What moves the price is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Samson.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, each call from Danygraig opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus whether it ran.

Given them, the range shrinks to one fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your policy while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Danygraig: still alongside the vehicle?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the most useful move open to you.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether it ran are everything our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Caerphilly, Danygraig too.
