# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Darbys Hill: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Darbys Hill.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is what many modern diesels around Darbys Hill and Cawney Hill carry, with diesel for your motor.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Darbys Hill: how it occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Darbys Hill Road before work, or in the car park outside The Fourways heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Grace Mary Estate or the middle of Darbys Hill, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Darbys Hill forecourt or a driveway out in Tansley Hill, take a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Dudley Port? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever it is in West Midlands — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of View Point, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Darbys Hill?

Short list, then. Top of that: the motor remains unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at BP, Esso or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear if you ask.

Your own driveway around Darbys Hill is where it should stay.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction means where to come off if you are on the M5, under 3 miles from Darbys Hill.

## Darbys Hill: what happens when our technicians arrive

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Oakham Primary School, near Darby's Hill Viewpoint or on your own driveway.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since those answers decide both work and quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is drained.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing clears away on its own, however long it is left.

After your filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
