# Daubhill: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once the pump begins drawing it.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands in Daubhill.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Daubhill

Do:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, pull the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which product, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Give us a postcode starting BL3 3, or whichever street lies closest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: the motor remains off.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it's wasted.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch down Pelham Street.

- Beside the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.

Ask the attendants to help you move your vehicle off the island if you're at a forecourt around Daubhill, whether it is the Esso or elsewhere.

On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Pocket last night and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through once your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches till it is cleared from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight in Daubhill makes it worse. In that tank only, time costs nothing.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Shell, and this issue is diluted fuel.

Blended into your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat for now; using your engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it splits again — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Daubhill or out in Middle Hulton, costs more than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Greater Manchester the car has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Daubhill

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

It mostly happens at home, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

Usually, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside St Bede Academy, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills your car.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Perth Street.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Morris Dancers, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Hired cars, new motors, fleet motors, or the spare car in a family with one of each: the least known cars get it most.

Wherever you're around Daubhill or the remainder of Greater Manchester, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Daubhill?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Maybe returning from Morris Green Park, or part way across Daubhill, the engine may run lumpy, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or cut out.

When you safely can, stop and switch it off — without restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M61, under 3 miles from Daubhill, at the next junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

A quick hop across Daubhill to the car park by The Salvation Army is one thing; driving towards Salford, under 10 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's spotted early.

## Daubhill: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped in Daubhill — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Church of the Nazarene — our van comes to the car.

Three answers shape the work, and so first our engineers ask what went in, roughly the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear away on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if your motor hasn't run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

Whether it's a parking space outside Bolton or a drive in Daubhill, that is where our technicians start the engine and you set off.

We make sure it runs properly on clean diesel before leaving.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

A van that comes to you fits Daubhill, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring the vehicle to us, because our engineers empty it on the spot, in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Daubhill?

No flat figure would be fair, since each job is different.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St. Bede Parish.

Ahead of a figure, not after, each call from Daubhill opens with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran.

With them, the range narrows to one fixed number.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Still next to the vehicle in Daubhill?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.
