# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Daybrook: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Daybrook.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of modern diesels in Top Valley, as well as Daybrook, carry on two fluids; your engine takes only the diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Daybrook: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Oxclose Lane, or heading home in the car park outside The Coopers Brook.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Bestwood or the middle of Daybrook, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Woodthorpe or a forecourt around Daybrook, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — at Bulwell's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in Nottinghamshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Byron Street.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Daybrook?

Brief order, then. Top of that: the motor remains unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the BP or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Daybrook.

When the motor has run by now, pull over safely then turn it off.

Daybrook lies under 5 miles from the M1; there, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Nottingham, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Daybrook.

## When our engineers arrive around Daybrook, what happens?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Burford Primary and Nursery School, close to St Timothy's Church Centre or on your own drive.

Those answers decide the work and our price, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody sets off before you have had the quote by phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it counts more.

Once your filter is flushed — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run take roughly half an hour after our technicians are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near The Peoples Church, a lay-by on the way to Salop Street Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Paul's Church.
