# Dean Bank: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor hasn't turned, it's drained and fully purged where the car is in Dean Bank.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — but many current diesels driven round Dean Bank and Mount Pleasant hold another liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each filling station call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Dean Bank?

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

On a drive off Neale Street before work, or in the car park at The Dean & Chapter on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on.

Ferryhill or the middle of Dean Bank: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Dean Bank or a driveway over in Low Spennymoor. Seconds, no more.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many vehicles show what goes in which inlet right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — from Bishop Auckland's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Durham that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Owen Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read it.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Step five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Dean Bank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs the pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the JET or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive around Dean Bank, leave the vehicle where it sits.

Where the motor has run by now, pull over safely then turn the car off.

Dean Bank lies under 3 miles from the A1(M); on it, use the first exit.

A short hop across Dean Bank is a smaller job than a run towards Durham, under 10 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When we arrive in Dean Bank, what takes place?

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Dean Bank Primary and Nursery School, close to Dean Bank & Ferryhill Literary Institute or on your own drive.

Those answers decide this work and the price, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

During the call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the car.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
