# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Debdale

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not turned, it's drained and fully purged where your vehicle sits in Debdale.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — yet many modern diesels seen around Debdale and Droylsden carry a second liquid as well.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side behind one flap.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Debdale: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Lunn Avenue before work, or in the car park outside The Prince of Wales on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a strange car.

No part halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Debdale or out in Abbey Hey.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Debdale forecourt or a driveway over in Belle Vue, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Gorton.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever you are across Greater Manchester — a routine to use.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Wentworth Avenue on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Finish when your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently using its own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Step five is off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Debdale?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Shell, Tesco or any forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle clear when asked.

Your own drive around Debdale is where it stays.

Already started? Pull over once it is safe, then switch off.

On the M60, under a mile from Debdale, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Manchester, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Debdale.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up in Debdale

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Abbey Hey Primary Academy, close to Abbey Hey/High Bank Crown Green Bowls Club or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because the replies settle this work and the quote.

Nobody heads out until you have had the quote over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out on its own, however long it is left.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

Then we start it and check it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we get there, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains about Debdale, and Greater Manchester beyond

Being a small village, Debdale shares its vans surrounding places — Openshaw, Gorton — all the way through M postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Quickest of all: quote a M18 8 postcode to the van.

Moving the car is not needed.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Gorton Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Parkstone Park, a driveway.

Guessing doesn't help behind St. Paul's with St. John's United Reformed Church, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and ask.

## For Debdale people, the short version

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere around Greater Manchester.
