# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dechmont: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Stop here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Dechmont.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Dechmont and Deans carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Dechmont: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Goodall Crescent, or on the way home in the car park at the pub in the village.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it.

Knightsridge or the middle of Dechmont: it is the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt in Dechmont or a driveway out in Upper Uphall. Seconds, no more.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Livingston North's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Lothian that is.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and never rushed by Main Street at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using the own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Dechmont: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at BP, Shell or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle away if you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Dechmont, leave the vehicle where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Dechmont lies under a mile from the M8; on it, use the first junction.

A short hop across Dechmont is a smaller job than a run towards Dunfermline, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What happens when we get there around Dechmont

By the local primary school, near Dechmont Park or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Then that tank is cleared and your system flushed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it sits.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
