# Dedridge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system draws it in.

In Dedridge, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Dedridge: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting EH54 6, or whatever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Dedridge East Road.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Dedridge filling station — the Asda among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

On the drive, your car remains exactly as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It does not blend. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Murieston overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it would be first through once your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting till morning in Dedridge makes things worse. In the tank only, waiting costs nothing.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Sainsbury's's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole fault.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside the tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Dedridge or out in Bellsquarry, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue waits only in the tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever the car has stopped around West Lothian.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Dedridge?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts invite it.

A container picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, because the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in.

Close to Quentin Rise, a driver tips a bottle in on that drive after work.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Parry Lamp, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new car, a fleet car, or the spare motor of a family with both fuels — the vehicles drivers use the least.

Wherever in West Lothian, Dedridge included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Dedridge?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Perhaps coming back from Dedridge Strip, or part way across Dedridge, the motor may go rough, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M8, under 3 miles from Dedridge, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Dedridge to the car park by Dedridge Baptist Church is a very different job from a run towards Dunfermline, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been run.

Lasting damage is very rare when it's noticed soon.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Dedridge: what it takes

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Dedridge: a side street close to Standing Stones, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid was put in, about how much, plus if the motor has been run: our engineers ask first, because those shape the work.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested.

Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step.

At that point our technicians start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space by Livingston South or a drive in Dedridge.

The check before we head off is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're by a border, or anywhere tricky to explain.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Dedridge

Every job is different, so no fixed quote is fair.

Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open driveway is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight space behind Lanthorn Community Centre.

Which fluid was put in, how much, and if the engine ran: every Dedridge enquiry begins with precisely those, before any figure, never afterwards.

With those replies, a range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told our price on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## In Dedridge and still next to the vehicle?

Right now, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Dedridge or anywhere within West Lothian, once you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
