# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Delph: Why It Occurs

Leave the engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where your car sits around Delph, is normally what it takes if found before the motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Delph and Braeside carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of cars have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Delph

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Denshaw Road before work, or in the car park outside The White Lion on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Heights or the middle of Delph: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Delph or a drive over in Linfitts. Seconds, no more.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Greenfield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are in Greater Manchester — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of High Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- Both behind a single flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then check once more — confirm the diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Delph?

Do not start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the Gulf or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Delph.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Delph lies under 5 miles from the M62; there, take the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Delph is less a job than a trip of under 15 miles towards Manchester, and so say.

## What takes place when we get there around Delph

By Delph Primary School, close to St Thomas Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run, since those answers determine this work and the quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, our engineers start it and confirm that it's running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## About Delph itself

Delph is a village in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 204 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Delph lies approximately 11 miles from Manchester and 163 miles from London, making it a relatively accessible rural community. Delph is surrounded by nearby places such as Heights, New Delph, and Delph Greave, which contribute to its local character. Delph has a population of around 1373 residents, according to approximate estimates.

## Delph and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

Delph is a village, and the teams that cover it also work the places near it, New Delph and Delph Greave among them, across the OL postcode area.

Give a postcode beginning OL3 5, and our van arrives quickest.

There's no need to shift the car.

Draining takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by Millgate Arts Centre, or a lay-by on the way to Swan Meadow Play Area.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Holy Trinity, ring and ask rather than guessing.
