# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Delph Greave

Leave your motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when the motor hasn't turned, it is drained and fully cleaned where your vehicle is around Delph Greave.

Here before the event? Then what follows covers why it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels on the roads round Delph Greave and Linfitts carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Delph Greave

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Ainley Wood, perhaps at The White Lion on the way home after work.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Delph Greave or out in Heights.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in New Delph or a forecourt in Delph Greave, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Greenfield? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — anywhere you are across Greater Manchester — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Lodge Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently through its built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel filler remained shut the whole time. After that, start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Delph Greave already?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Shell, Gulf or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car clear when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Delph Greave.

Where your engine has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the car off.

Delph Greave sits under 5 miles from the M62; there, use the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Manchester, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Delph Greave.

## Delph Greave: what takes place when we turn up

Outside Delph Primary School, close to St Thomas Church or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those answers determine the work and our price.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

After that our engineers start the car and check it runs smoothly before we go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we arrive, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
