# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Denholme: Why It Happens

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Denholme, catching it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to the engine — yet many newer diesels seen about Denholme and Manywells Height hold a second liquid too.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Denholme: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Main Road before work, or in the car park at The Royal on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and once the tip starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Denholme or out in Denholme Edge.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Denholme forecourt or a drive over in Well Heads, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars mark what belongs in each inlet right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bingley.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around West Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Foster Park.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Denholme?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the staff will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

At home around Denholme? Then your car remains put.

Where your motor has run already, stop safely then turn it off.

The next junction is the place to leave if you are on the M606, under 10 miles from Denholme.

A short hop across Denholme is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians arrive around Denholme

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Denholme Primary School, near Denholme Library or on your own driveway.

Which fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because the replies decide the work and price.

Nobody sets off before you have heard the quote over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. That is why it counts more.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Next our engineers start it and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
