# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Denio

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor has not run, it is drained and fully cleaned where your vehicle sits around Denio.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — yet many current diesels driven round Denio and South Beach hold another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Denio?

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Troed yr Allt, or on the way home in the car park at Y Castell.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Hire cars, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Denio or out in Penrallt.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Denio forecourt or a driveway over in Marian-y-mor, spend a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Pwllheli.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Gwynedd that is.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Plas Tanrallt on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel filler remained closed throughout. Only then, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Step five is out.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Denio?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at BP, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually help to push your car clear if asked.

Your own drive around Denio is the place it should stay.

Where the engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off.

On the Moreton Spur, over 50 miles from Denio, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Denio makes a smaller job than driving under 50 miles to Bangor — so tell us about how far it went.

## Denio: what occurs when we arrive

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether outside the local primary school, near Eglwys St Peter's Church or at home, the van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run, because the answers decide the work and our quote.

No one sets off before you've had the quote by phone.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out by itself. That is why it counts more.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running properly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
