# Denmore: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down for now, leave the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully flushed where the vehicle sits around Denmore.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels in Hayton, as well as Denmore, carry on two liquids; the motor takes only the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Denmore: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a drive off Tern Place before work, or in the car park outside The Black Dog heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Denmore or out in Bridge of Don.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Tillydrone or a forecourt around Denmore.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Aberdeen? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Aberdeen City that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Denmore Place, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.

- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Denmore?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Asda or anywhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Denmore, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Denmore lies over 50 miles from the M90; on it, use the first junction.

A short hop across Denmore is a smaller job than a run towards Aberdeen, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Denmore, and what takes place next

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Marks & Spencer or on your own drive.

The answers decide the work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run.

The quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is emptied and the system rinsed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour once we are there.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
