# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Derry? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition too.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The harm begins once it's sucked through the lines — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully cleaned where the car stands around Derry.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Derry, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

- Remove the keys, and that prevents someone turning the power on.

- Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call just where you are. Say a BT48 6 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Don't do these:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition your car.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Crown Street.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

Rolling your vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Derry forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station or any other.

At your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very spot the pickup draws from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ardmore last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

By daybreak, a car parked in Derry with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just in the tank, it doesn't.

And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that rely on it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Mixed through your diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; using the motor does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Maydown or the middle of Derry.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around County Londonderry the car has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Derry: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — may look the same. Nobody intends it; many designs invite it.

A container bought when heading home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

The refill is rushed outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken off.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Rock Street.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside the pub in the village, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, new vehicles, company vehicles, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known cars get it most.

Wherever you're around Derry or the remainder of County Londonderry, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Derry?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

It has been sucked through your filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might show up, perhaps midway across Derry or coming back from the green space at the edge of the village.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M77, over 50 miles from Derry, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why a hop across Derry to park beside the centre and a drive of under a mile for Derry are very distinct jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the engine has been running.

When it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Derry?

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Derry: a side street near a street just off the centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, and if the engine has turned over: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is emptied, right there.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since what remains won't wash away unaided.

A test of the car follows last, after fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, replaced.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians get there, provided your motor has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the final step.

After that our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay by the nearest station or a drive in Derry.

It is tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our technicians go.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

The vans that answer AdBlue calls around Derry also cover the spots about it, Nixons Corner, Newbuildings and Strathfoyle among them, and most of County Londonderry beyond, across the BT postcode area.

Close to a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

Derry is a neighbourhood, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Derry: the cost of fixing it

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind the far end of the built-up part.

Before a figure, not after, each call from Derry begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran.

Their replies narrow a range down to a single number.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## In Derry and still beside your car?

Then, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Derry or anywhere across County Londonderry.
