# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Desertmartin? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave your ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens till your motor pulls it round.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands around Desertmartin.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Your next steps straight away, Desertmartin: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- Remove the keys, which prevents someone switching the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a BT45 5 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Don't:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.

- Even a short distance up B842 is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Beside the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Desertmartin forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station included.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same spot the intake draws from.

A motor topped up on a drive in Knockcloghrim yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage by morning for a car sitting in Desertmartin. Only inside your tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water content damages them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the whole problem.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid.

It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Draperstown or the middle of Desertmartin.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Anywhere across County Londonderry the car has stopped, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

## Desertmartin: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. Nobody means it.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, because your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were dropped in.

A driver tips the bottle in at home, right off Dunaverty Court, as the day ends.

Otherwise, in dim light outside the pub in the village, your car is refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical mistake, same first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Desertmartin or the remainder of County Londonderry.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Desertmartin?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may appear, perhaps midway across Desertmartin or returning from the green space at the edge of the village.

When you safely can, stop and switch everything off — with no restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Desertmartin, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading for Armagh, under 50 miles away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Desertmartin to the car park by the centre.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the engine has been running.

If it is spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Desertmartin?

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road beside a street just off the centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Desertmartin, and the van travels to it.

The work rests on three replies, which our engineers get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if the motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is emptied, right there.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where your motor has not run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Then we fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay at the nearest station or a driveway around Desertmartin.

Before we leave, we check it's running correctly with fresh diesel in.

Since the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Phone and check rather than guess if you are by a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

Desertmartin is a small village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Desertmartin: the cost of fixing it

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

What moves the cost is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind the far end of the built-up part.

Ahead of a figure, not afterwards, each call from Desertmartin opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran.

Once those are known, a range becomes a single firm figure.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## In Desertmartin and still beside the car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.
