# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Devol: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Devol, catching it before the motor turns usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

Here before the event? Then what follows covers why it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one liquid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels around Devol and Glen Huntly run, with diesel for your motor.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Devol?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Harelaw Avenue before work, or in the car park at Star Hotel on the way home.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It takes seconds, whether in Boglestone or right in the centre of Devol.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Devol or a driveway out in High Carnegie. A few seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many cars show what goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Port Glasgow? Ask whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, anywhere in Inverclyde, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Muirshiel Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Devol: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine remains off.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Tesco or the Morrisons, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Your own driveway in Devol is the place it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M8, under 5 miles from Devol, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Devol is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles to Glasgow — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians arrive around Devol, what happens?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near National Cycle Network route marker or on your own driveway.

Those answers settle the work and our price, and so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

During the call itself, you hear our price — ahead of anything else.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away on its own, however long it sits.

After the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and then the vehicle gets tested.

Before leaving, we start it and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains about Devol, and Inverclyde beyond

Devol is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Whitecroft and Fyfe Shore among them, across the PA postcode area.

A postcode starting PA14 5 gets the van to you fastest.

The car stays where it is.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Robert Street Apprentices War Memorial, a lay-by on the way to Port Glasgow Golf Club, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Future in Hand.

## Devol motorists: the short version

Pour nothing till you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Inverclyde, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103.
