# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Digmoor: Why It Occurs

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Digmoor.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that's how many modern diesels near Digmoor and West Pimbo carry, with diesel for your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Digmoor?

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Acregate before work, or in the car park outside The Highwayman on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar vehicles come second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, carries on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Digmoor or out in Tanhouse.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Digmoor forecourt or a drive over in Town Centre, take a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many vehicles show which goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Upholland? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lancashire that is.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by Bearncroft on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.

- Both behind a single flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Digmoor?

Brief order, then. First: your engine stays unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Texaco, Shell or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away when asked.

If you're on your own drive around Digmoor, leave the car where it sits.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M58, under a mile from Digmoor, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Digmoor is a smaller job than a run towards Liverpool, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Digmoor: what takes place when we arrive

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School, close to Christ the Servant or on your own driveway.

Those answers settle the work and our quote, and so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

Nobody heads out before you've had the price over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out by itself. Hence it counts more.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take about half an hour after we are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103.
