# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dilton Marsh: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where the car sits in Dilton Marsh, is normally all it needs if found before the motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the engine — but many newer diesels seen round Dilton Marsh and Stormore hold another fluid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Dilton Marsh

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off St Marys Lane, perhaps outside The Weavers on the way home after work.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, carries on.

It takes seconds, be it out in Penknap or bang in the heart of Dilton Marsh.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Dilton Marsh forecourt or a drive out in Westbury Leigh, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you pick up a rental or fleet car — at the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not once the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere in Wiltshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Vicarage Gardens, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found your filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Dilton Marsh?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Esso, BP or another — the attendants will usually help push your car away, if you ask.

On your own drive around Dilton Marsh? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

Where the engine has run by now, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

Leave the M4 — under 25 miles out of Dilton Marsh — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bath, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Dilton Marsh.

## Dilton Marsh: what happens when our engineers turn up

Anywhere the car came to rest, whether by Dilton Marsh CofE Primary School, near Holy Trinity or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers set both work and quote.

On the call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
