# Dimsdale: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, when the motor hasn't run, it is emptied and fully purged where the car is around Dimsdale.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Dimsdale and Beasley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Dimsdale: how it takes place

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off North Terrace, perhaps outside The Potters Wheel on the way home that evening.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Porthill or the middle of Dimsdale, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt around Dimsdale or a drive out in Bradwell. A few seconds, no more.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Longport.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — wherever it is in Staffordshire — a routine to use.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed by Hartington Street on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip slowly through its own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Dimsdale: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels it alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Esso, BP or any other — the staff will usually help roll the car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Dimsdale.

When the engine has been run by now, pull over safely then switch the car off.

Leave the M6 — under 5 miles out of Dimsdale — at the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Dimsdale is smaller work than a trip of under 3 miles towards Stoke-on-Trent, so tell us.

## When our technicians arrive in Dimsdale, what happens?

The van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near Wolstanton United Reform Church, or by Ellison Primary Academy.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
