# Doe Lea: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where the vehicle sits around Doe Lea, is usually all it takes when caught before your motor runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads about Doe Lea and Stainsby carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Doe Lea

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Mansfield Road, or at Elm Tree on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Bramley Vale or the middle of Doe Lea, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Rylah or a forecourt in Doe Lea.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Shirebrook? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is across Derbyshire — a simple routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of North Street.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Doe Lea?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Esso, ask the staff to help push your car clear of the pump.

At home in Doe Lea? So the vehicle stays where it is.

Already run? Stop once it's safe, then turn off.

On the M1, under a mile from Doe Lea, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Doe Lea is smaller a job than a run of under 15 miles to Sheffield, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Doe Lea, and what occurs next

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Bramley Vale Primary & Nursery School, close to Dancing Flowers of Doe Lea or on your own drive.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those answers determine the work and our price.

The price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After your filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
